Hello readers! It's Mei-Mei, sorry I forgot to blog yesterday--it was very busy as you can imagine for it was our first day.
We woke up at a good and decent time, a little before 8 AM. We ate breakfast, packed our lunches, and then at 8:45 AM had orientation. After learning about the do's and don't's of the Dolphin Research Center, we loaded the mini vans, and were headed for an adventure!
Let me just say that the Dolphins were SPECTACULAR to say the least. I never realized how amazing and graceful dolphins are, and I am speaking on behalf of everyone. And the accommodations that the Dolphin Research Center (DRC) has for the dolphins, is like staying at a 5 star hotel for them. We went inside the fish house (I know, smelly right? But don't worry, we got used to the smell) and learned that the process of organizing the fish and the cleaning of the actual fish house is very intense because of the concern of the bacteria in the fish will therefore affect the dolphins. In one of the seminars (which are PowerPoint presentations) we learned that dolphins have very fragile stomachs. So therefore, at the DCR, they inspect every single fish that go in each of the dolphins designated bins for either AM, PM, and snack time. And if a fish is either missing an eye, or has a cut in the side, they will either throw the whole fish away, or cut off the "infected" part and donate it to a bird sanctuary for them to eat (because birds have MUCH stronger stomachs than the dolphins).
After we said goodbye to the dolphins, we left, and ate hamburgers or hot dogs...well in Kyla's case, she ate a veggie burger. We then went to Publix and got some groceries for the morning, went back to the dormitories, watched gossip girl, and played card games in one of the rooms. It was a good and very fun day! Alright, more to come soon (as well as pictures and videos!!!)

We want pictures and video!
ReplyDeleteI am glad to know so much effort is put into caring for the dolphins, I didn't realize they had sensitive stomachs!
ReplyDeleteHey Mei-Mei! You girls are living my dream. It's so cool that you get to be so close to the dolphins. Do they look you in the eye? Have you learned what they are saying when they "talk"?
ReplyDeleteIts so neat, we learn so many things here! They really emphasize that dolphins are complex but very loving creatures through the seminars that they had for us. Today was sadly our last day...I'll blog more about that later. But we don't know what they say when they talk, the people who work there can guess but we haven't really cracked their code yet. And yes! They look us in the eye all the time, its really phenomenal.
